The Leading Hotels of the World

Ltd., commonly known as Leading Hotels or LHW, is a hospitality marketing organization comprising more than 375 luxury hotels and resorts in over 75 countries. Headquartered in New York City, the company maintains offices in 25 cities worldwide. Leading Hotels of the World markets to high-end travelers and includes a collection of multi-generational family-owned properties. 

Leading Hotels of the World was founded in 1928 by Theodore Kittredge Williamson Jr., Harry B. Kessler, and Lawrence Lee Jr., sons of American businessmen who had developed significant hotel holdings in Europe during the first two decades of the century. The founders intended to provide travelers with a guide to “Leading Hotels of Europe,” as there were no comprehensive guides available then. In 1931, the company expanded its scope to include hotels in North America and worldwide.

New York City’s The Plaza Hotel

The hotel was designed in the French Renaissance style by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh and opened to the public on October 1, 1907. The Plaza Hotel has been owned by several different companies and individuals over the years, including Donald Trump, who purchased the property in 1988.
