Travel Tips

Air travel is often a source of migraines; but noise canceling headsets or earphones may be the answer.

The plane is the fastest way to get you where you want. But it is not the quietest way.

The Dr. Amar Bose was found during a flight Zurich – Boston in 1978. Since 1963, the airlines offer their passenger’s in-flight audio entertainment via pneumatic tubes shaped helmets that looked like stethoscopes. At the end of the 1970s, pneumatic helmets were gradually replaced by electronic models. When Dr. Bose first experienced this on a flight to Boston, he was both enthusiastic and disappointed. Headsets were able to provide travelers with superior sound, but airplane cabins were far too noisy to take advantage of them.

This is where Dr. Bose had an acoustic revelation: based on physics, he designed a headset which detects external noise using a microphone, and which at the same time generates an equivalent signal but opposite (via electronic components) which cancels these noises before they reach the eardrums of the user. This is how noise canceling headphones came about.

More than 40 years later, the problem of aircraft noise is still topical. In 2018, the online travel agency Agoda asked more than 10,000 travelers around the world what bothered them the most when traveling by plane; noisy passengers were in first place.

Fortunately, today’s travelers have a little something that those of 1978 did not have: a veritable arsenal of superior noise-canceling headsets and earphones designed for travel and saim deals have the list of high quality headsets which helps you in making purchasing decision. These devices will not be able to help you if the baggage compartments are already full or if you receive kicks from the passenger behind you. However, they will help you overcome these four particularly annoying problems when traveling by plane:

Problem: too noisy engines that prevent you from enjoying your in-flight entertainment

Initially, it was the perpetual din of airplane cabins that prompted Dr. Bose to design noise-canceling headphones and earphones. This mixture of engine roar, wind blast and humming from the air conditioning invades passengers’ ears in the form of a kind of soft and regular white noise which prevents them from fully enjoying in-flight entertainment (television and movies by example). Noise canceling headsets and earphones eliminate this ambient noise pollution and offer superior sound quality compared to headsets offered free of charge by most airlines. The noise canceling headphones Quiet Comfort 20, for example, incorporate an active equalization technology that provides unparalleled sound clarity. Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 and Quiet Comfort 35 II wireless headphones, on the other hand, offer optimized equalization based on volume, which provides a similar result. Combining exceptional audio quality with active noise reduction technology lets you hear your music or movies more clearly, or, if you prefer, hear nothing at all.

But the worst thing about this ambient cabin noise is its persistence. No matter how long your flight lasts, the buzzing doesn’t stop. For airplane passengers, the best noise reduction headsets or earphones are therefore those that have a long battery life. Quiet Comfort 20 noise canceling headphones provide up to 16 hours of battery life, while Quiet Comfort 35 II wireless headphones or Bose Noise Canceling Headphones 700 offer 20 hours of battery life; these models won’t let you down even on the longest international flights.

Problem: neighbors a little too talkative

Sitting on a plane is like a box of chocolate: you never know who you’re going to run into. Wearing noise-canceling headphones or earphones politely indicates that you do not want to talk and that you prefer to sleep. What if your neighbor’s pixelate prefers to speak to another person? In addition to telling your neighbors that you want to relax, your device will help you by eliminating all traces of their conversation.

But beware, some conversations cannot be ignored. For example, when the pilot or a flight attendant addresses passengers, it is important to listen to them. Nothing could be simpler with the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 which has 11 levels of noise reduction, including a “Talk mode” which you can use to pause noise reduction if necessary. Likewise, QuietComfort 20 noise canceling headphones offer an “Aware” mode that you can activate at the touch of a button, so you can hear what’s going on around you.

Problem: fear on the plane

Many people are afraid of flying. Some of them (20% of the population, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America ) are so afraid of the plane that they give up the idea of   going on vacation or accepting jobs that require travel. If you suffer from airplane phobia, noise canceling headphones or earphones can help. In a 2013 study, scientists discovered that listening to classical music or nature sounds can improve the body’s response to stress and reduce stress. In a 2017 study, British neuroscientists have also discovered that music can reduce anxiety by more than 65%. They also identified 10 music as the most relaxing in the world to combat stress; they are grouped together in a playlist that you can listen to for free on Sportily®, thanks to Melanie Curtin, editor for magazine.

Music and nature are not your only options. Thanks to their Bluetooth® connectivity, your Bose noise reduction headsets and earphones can be used to listen to mobile applications, such as Headspace, which guides you in breathing exercises or even meditation sessions.

Problem: difficulty falling asleep

For many people, sleeping in an airplane is an impossible task. Travel pillows or eye masks can help, but they won’t prevent you from hearing the baby crying a little further, the flight attendant taking orders or the neighbor snoring. Noise reduction headsets and earphones, if.

These are not only the sounds that you can eliminate, but also those that replace them. With the Bose Music app, you can access and control your music so you can fall asleep more easily.
